The marines of Golf Company in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province are on a dangerous mission. In the two months the Second Battalion has been deployed, over 10 per cent of its 180-man unit has been injured in roadside bomb attacks. Al Jazeera’s Clayton Swisher follows a patrol on a village “clearing” operation aiming to locate bomb-making materials.

After days of fierce fighting, the military says it has seized control of Kotkai, said to be the hometown of Hakimullah Mehsud, the Pakistani Taliban leader. But in the shadow of military accomplishments, the fighting is forcing civilians to flee. More than 200000 people have left their homes and still more are expected to follow.
